Overview: Students enroll in the cement masonry program to learn basic skills in preparation for a union apprenticeship or entry-level cement mason position. | |

There are two levels to the program: cement helper; cement mason pre-apprentice. Students are oriented to the trade to ensure that they can demonstrate an understanding of the performance and responsibility of a cement mason on the job. Other areas of study include knowing and understanding basic work techniques; practicing general safety on the job; exercising care in using hand tools and equipment; hand tool identification and usage; power tool identification and usage; forming tools; fundamental theory in cement masonry; basic math; blueprint reading; fundamentals of concrete; layout stamp finish; placing the concrete; striking off; bullfloat and darby; edging; jointing; hand trowel and hand float; curbs, gutters, sidewalks and step forms; sealing, patching and repairing; reinforcement materials; and scaffold building. Instructor:A Job Corps graduate in 1998, instructor Shaun Crooks is happy to be at Wolf Creek Job Corps. Having worked as a Union Cement Mason for the past eight years on commercial high rise construction and hospitals in the Portland and Seattle areas, he brings first hand knowledge and experience to the students of Job Corps. Shaun has the philosophy of putting in an honest eight hours work for an honest eight hours pay and would like to impress that upon his students. TARS: TARS, training achievement records, are used to track a student's completion of the specific skills needed to demonstrate proficiency in the duties and tasks used in an area of competency. This is an open entry and exit program wherein students progress at an individual pace. When a skill is demonstrated the instructor grades the student's achievement as 1. Exposed/Introduced; 2. Perform with direct supervision; 3. Perform with limited supervision. or 0: no instruction or experience in this area. Enrollment: The program is designed for 20 slots. |
